“ECHO FLORS”
Volume up & Click the petals
Volume up & Click the petals
This project was inspired by Neil Harbisson, an artist born completely color-blind. He is best known for being the first person in the world to have an antenna implanted in his skull. This device translates colors into audible vibrations, enabling him to "hear" colors through the vibrations transmitted to his skull. From his story, I wanted to create a project that allows color-blind individuals to engage with art through sound.
For "Echo Flora", I created an interactive painting website. On the website, viewers can click on different petals in the painting, triggering corresponding sounds. This way, color-blind people can experience the painting by "listening" to its colors. The painting itself was inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe, whose vibrant depictions of flowers are striking and full of life. I painted a flower with petals in various shapes and colors. representing diversity and individuality. I also chose a metallic silver background, to evoke a sense of futurism.
I collaborated with my musician friend, Tiankai Li, to create a set of soundtracks for the petals. The sounds share similar melodies but differ in beats and effects, reflecting the distinct emotions I associate with each color. For instance, the sound for blue is smooth and peaceful, yellow is upbeat and joyful, and dark red is deep and heavy. This mapping of sound to color was based on my personal feelings and interpretations.
